Helen Stephenson's Ely Cathedral Pictures

This page contains clickable images.

I visited Ely Cathedral some years ago with my Mother, and this year (August 1999) I had a visit from an Australian relative who is very interested in cathedrals, and I detoured through Ely on the way back from Peterborough, and took some more exterior photographs.

Ely Cathedral stands in the fen country of East Anglia. It has an asymmetrical appearance due to the collapse of the towers on one side of the West door. However, this lack of part of the original front does afford a good view of the Lady Chapel towards the rear of the building.

Here is the view past the North Transept to the Lady Chapel again. The Octagonal Tower can also be seen.

The next three views all show the West Tower.

When I visited Ely Cathedral, we climbed the West Tower. It is also possible to ascend the Octagonal Tower, but our visit did not coincide with the opening times of that tower.

The views from the West Tower are good: on the left is the view overlooking the Octagonal Tower.

On the right, just to prove we really did both go up the West Tower, here's Mother getting ready to take a picture of me!

On the left is the view looking past the smaller towers on the south side of the West Tower.

On the right are the smaller towers. It can be seen from above that these towers contain an inverted cone with a rainwater trap.

The interior of the Octagonal Tower is decorated with paintings and it has stained glass windows.
