Helen Stephenson's Leadenhall Market Pictures

This page contains clickable images.

During the 2005 London Open House Weekend, Stephen and I walked through Leadenhall Market. We went there late, and it was quite deserted: ideal for some leisurely photography.

These pictures were captured using a Pentax *ist DS digital SLR camera.

Leadenhall Market is a beautifully restored Victorian building which retains many of its original features. It maintains the same colour scheme throughout, with tenant businesses being required to adhere to it - even Pizza Express!

Leadenhal Market is cross shaped. On the left is the view looking south from the Leadenhall Street entrance. On the right are close-up views of the exterior of the central lantern roof, the facade with its clock face, and the interior of the roof line.

Leadenhall Market is a bustling centre on weekdays, with City workers shopping there and usings its two pubs. However, when I visited at almost 6pm at the weekend, the whole place was deserted, allowing an uninterrupted view of the architecture.

Here are some more pictures looking south through the centre of the building. On the left are more ceiling details and hanging lamps silhouetted against an external building; while on the right we have a wider view of the building's walls and ceiling.

The three next pictures were taken from the centre of the market. The Lamb Tavern is one of two pubs housed in Leadenhall Market. It occupies the north east corner at the centre of the building. The other view is looking west towards the Gracechurch Street entrance.

The next two pictures show some of the decoration on the friezes which go around the building above the shop fronts.

Dragons are a recurring theme throughout the City of London, and Leadenhall Market has its fair share of them. I've also shown a pillar below which has gilt figures worked on it.

Here are two views of the central lantern in the ceiling. The view on the right was taken in August 2006 during a guided walk whose route took us through the market.

The next two pictures came from another guided walk in April 2009.

Here is a lantern ceiling at the centre of the cross in Leadenhall Market again.

Our guide also pointed out the location used in some of the Harry Potter films as the entrance to The Leaky Cauldron. It is in Bulls Head Passage on the periphery of the Market, and was painted black for the film. It is now an optician's shop and the entrance is blue.

I'm going to conclude with a picture taken on a weekday after work looking into Leadenhall Market from Gracechurch Street, which shows the crowd outside the market's other pub, The Lamb.

Leadenhall Market is certainly a busy place when City workers are shopping or relaxing after a hard day in the office!
