Stephen at Kew

Stephen and I went to Kew Gardens during the autumn.

Pages 2 and 3

Stephen in the Derbyshire landscape near Castleton

Monsal Dale in Derbyshire, viewed from Monsal Head

Stephen on a tram at the National Tram Museum, Crich, Derbyshire

Working tram at the National Tram Museum, Crich, Derbyshire

Tram in shed at the National Tram Museum, Crich, Derbyshire

Stephen and I were lucky enough to get the opportunity to spend a few days in a cottage in Derbyshire. I've included a picture of Stephen looking towards Castleton, with the Derbyshire landscape behind him; a picture of Monsal Dale taken from Monsal Head; another picture of Stephen, when he was allowed to stand at the controls of a tram (they weren't very busy on a cold day in December) and two pictures of trams at the National Tramway Museum at Crich in Derbyshire.

Pages 4 and 5

Autumn leaves at Kew Gardens

Coleus plants at Kew Gardens

Cacti at Kew Gardens

Jessie loves plants, so I included some pictures from when Stephen and I paid an autumn visit to Kew Gardens. On the left, you can see autumn leaves and coleus plants, while on the right you can see a group of cacti inside one of the conservatories.

Pages 6 and 7

Flower at Kew Gardens

Waterlily at Kew Gardens

Orchid at Kew Gardens

This is another two-page spread of pictures from Kew. On the left is a flower we saw in one of the outdoor gardens; while on the right are a waterlily from the waterlily house, and an orchid from one of the conservatories.

Pages 8 and 9

Cockerel at the Mottingham campus of Hadlow College

Sempervivium Arachnoideum Flowers in our garden

Stephen's daughter is studying at the Mottingham campus of Hadlow College, and Stephen and I went along to the college open day, where I snapped this picture of a cockerel from their livestock collection. The flower on the right is a Sempervivium Arachnoideum which was blooming profusely in a tub in our front garden.

Pages 10 and 11

The World moored at Greenwich

STV Prince William moored by HMS Belfast, with Tower Bridge in the background

RV Triton moored by HMS Belfast with City Hall behind

Paddle Steamer Waverley moored at Tower Millennium Pier

This double page is unashamedly my choice of pictures, and reflects my ongoing photographic project this year, which has been to photograph interesting vessels which visit London. Top left is The World, a timeshare cruise liner. She is too large to sail up the Thames to central London and docked at Greenwich. Lower left is the sailing training vessel Prince William, moored alongside HMS Belfast, and with Tower Bridge in the background. Top right is research vessel Triton, built to trial a trimaran hull for the Royal Navy. Lower right is the paddle Steamer Waverley, who visits London during the autumn and moors at Tower Millennium Pier.

Pages 12 and 13

White cliffs at Newhaven

Hastings, viewed from Bexhill

Breakwater and lighthouse at Newhaven

Ferry Dieppe arriving at Newhaven

These pictures were taken one summer day when we took Jessie on a trip to the coast. We didn't have very good weather, and she still remembers the thunderstorm and accompanying hail that pelted down on us and forced us to take shelter in the car. Fortunately there were dry intervals as well. Top left and right are pictures of the two sides of Newhaven harbour: white cliffs on the east, and a breakwater with a small lighthouse on the west. Below left is a picture of Hastings as viewed from Bexhill. This was the view we were admiring when the thunder started. Below right is the ferry Dieppe coming into Newhaven.

Pages 14 and 15

Bluff and lighthouse near Beachy Head

Farm on the South Downs near Beachy Head

Cottages in Brasted

The White Hart, Brasted

The left page here has some more images taken on our trip to the coast. Above is a bluff and lighthouse near Beachy Head. (This isn't the famous lighthouse, which is at the base of some cliffs and isn't visible from the car.) Below is a farm on the South Downs. The right page shows two pictures from Brasted, a village Jessie knows well. I've included some pretty tile-hung cottages (at least one of which now sports an antique shop sign) and a picture of the White Hart, where Jessie worked for many years.

Charing Church interior

Jessie's early years were spent in east Kent, and when I played in a concert at the church in Charing, I made sure I took along my camera and got a picture of the interior of the church for Jessie.
